How did the players fare in Newcastle United's 2-1 win over Southampton?
NEWCASTLE (3-4-2-1):
8 Dubravka: Made two fantastic first-half saves that had a huge influence on the final outcome – dealt with crosses effectively throughout
8 Fernandez: Won his defensive headers all afternoon and popped up in the right place to drive home the late winner
6 Clark: Did reasonably well against Ings and Long in the first half, but suffered a calf injury that prevented him returning after the interval
7 Dummett: Defended resolutely, putting his body on the line, and wasn’t shaken by a nasty clash of heads that left him bleeding
6 Manquillo: Wasn’t able to get forward as he would have liked, but was solid in defence against the dangerous Redmond
7 Hayden: Another impressive display from the midfielder, who used the ball effectively in the central third
8 Shelvey: Powered home an excellent header to level the scores and delivered some effective passes in the second half
7 Willems: Displayed his usual energy down the left-hand side and kept the dangerous Djenepo quiet throughout
6 Almiron: Wasn’t the Paraguayan’s most effective game, although he never stopped running in an attempt to create an opening
6 Saint-Maximin: Made some eye-catching dribbles, but his final ball let him down and he suffered a hamstring injury in stoppage time
6 Joelinton: Battled for everything that was hurled in his direction, but didn’t look like scoring once again
Subs:
5 Schar (for Clark, 46): His defensive misjudgement was a big factor in Ings’ goal, but he improved after that
8 CARROLL (for Joelinton, 59): Turned the game on its head in the final half-hour and delivered a brilliant cross for Shelvey’s goal
S Longstaff (for Almiron, 85)
(not used): Darlow (gk), Krafth, Atsu, Gayle.
SOUTHAMPTON (4-4-2):
McCarthy 5; Soares 6, Stephens 7, Bednarek 6, Bertrand 6; Djenepo 5 (Boufal 73), Ward-Prowse 6, Hojbjerg 5, REDMOND 7; Long 5, Ings 7 (Adams 88).
Subs (not used): Gunn (gk), Yoshida, Vestergaard, Romeu, Obafemi.
Man Of The Match: ANDY CARROLL – He was only on the pitch for half-an-hour, but his power and sense of purpose transformed the course of the game.
