How did the players fare in Newcastle United's 1-0 defeat at Chelsea?

CHELSEA (4-3-3):

Arrizabalaga 6; Azpilicueta 7, Tomori 6, Zouma 7, Alonso 8; Barkley 5 (Kovacic 42, 6), Jorginho 6, Mount 6 (Pulisic 64, 7); Willian 7, Abraham 6, HUDSON-ODOI 8 (James 90).

Subs (not used): Caballero (gk), Guehi, Giroud, Batshuayi.

NEWCASTLE (3-4-2-1):

7 Dubravka: Made good second-half saves from Pulisic and Willian, but might feel he should have done better with Alonso’s winner

6 Schar: Made some important challenges, especially in the first half, but conceded possession cheaply on a number of occasions

6 Lascelles: Kept Abraham relatively quiet from open play and held his position at the heart of defence reasonably well

7 CLARK: The pick of the Newcastle side as he won some important headers and stuck closely to Chelsea’s forwards in the box

6 Yedlin: Made a superb block to prevent Abraham from scoring, but stood off Chelsea’s wide players, allowing them to cross

5 S Longstaff: Wasn’t able to take control of the game and was outperformed by Chelsea’s central midfielders

5 M Longstaff: Back to reality after his heroics before the international break, although his commitment still shone through

4 Willems: Tired markedly in the second half as Chelsea began to dominate down their right-hand side

6 Saint-Maximin: Embarked on some excellent first-half dribbles, but was much less of an attacking influence in the second half

4 Almiron: Another disappointing display from a player whose confidence appears to have completely disappeared

5 Joelinton: Never looked like getting a shot away, let alone scoring, and is suffering from a chronic lack of service

Subs:

5 Carroll (for Almiron, 70): Wasn’t able to change the course of a game – how long before he is ready to play from the start?

Atsu (for Joelinton, 83)

Gayle (for Saint-Maximin, 85)

(not used): Darlow (gk), Dummett, Krafth, Shelvey.

Man Of The Match: CALLUM HUDSON-ODOI – The Chelsea winger was the liveliest attacking presence on the pitch, and teed up Alonso’s winner.
