JACK LAUGHER will attempt to complete a clean sweep of major gold medals when he competes in next month’s World Diving Championships in South Korea.

The Ripon diver has won Olympic, European and Commonwealth gold, but has never triumphed at a World Championships.

He will have two opportunities to change that in Gwangju, with the British selectors having this week confirmed his place in the 3m individual springboard and 3m synchronised springboard events.

Having won major medals with Chris Mears in the past, Laugher will team up with his new partner, Dan Goodfellow, in the synchro.

The pair have achieved a string of creditable results on the World Cup stage this season, and will travel to South Korea with strong hopes of competing for a place on the podium.

“I go into every competition I do with the goal of winning, and that will be no different in Gwanju, both in the individual event and with Dan in the synchro,” said Laugher, who is based at British Diving’s high-performance centre in Leeds.

“2019 has been a good year so far, with my performances improving as the weeks have gone by, so I’m excited to see what we can do at the World Championships.

“We have a very strong team of divers, with Great Britain now one of the top diving nations in the world, so as a team we’ll be looking to win a number of medals and secure as many Olympic spots as we can.”

With next month’s World Championships forming a key part of the qualifying process for next year’s Olympics in Tokyo, Laugher’s performances will have a major impact on his hopes of defending the Olympic synchro gold he won in Rio.

Laugher will form part of a 13-strong British team in South Korea, with World champion Tom Daley also having been selected.

Daley struck gold when the World Championships were last staged in Budapest in 2017, and has been in fine form so far in 2019, claiming the overall series crown at the FINA World Diving Series.

Like Laugher, Daley is teaming up with a new synchro partner this season, with Matty Lee performing alongside him in the 10m synchro.

As well as Britain’s proven championship performers, the squad also features a number of divers who will be making their World Championship debut next month.

Recently crowned British champions Scarlett Mew Jensen and Noah Williams will be making the step up to World level, with the former competing in the 1m and 3m individual springboard competitions and the latter selected in the 10m high-board along with Daley.

“I am very pleased with the selections we have made for this summer’s World Championships,” said British Diving performance director Alexei Evangulov.

“2019 has been a very successful year so far, but we need to deliver our very best performances in Gwangju when it matters most.

“We have a number of medal chances based on how we have been diving in the FINA Diving World Series, but securing spot for Tokyo 2020 is equally important to us. Hopefully, we can achieve both of these aims.”

The World Diving Championships begin on Friday, July 12 and run to Saturday, July 20, with the World Swimming Championships, featuring Teessider Aimee Willmott, taking place immediately afterwards.
