What happened to the Sunderland side that lost on penalties to Charlton Athletic in the 1998 Division One play-off final?
1. Lionel Perez
The French goalkeeper left Sunderland after the play-off final to join Newcastle United. After hanging up his gloves, he spent time as Stevenage’s goalkeeping coach before moving on from football.
2. Darren Holloway
The Crook-born defender has moved into coaching since the end of his playing days and is assistant manager at Blyth Spartans as well as head coach at the East Durham College football academy.
3. Michael Gray
The Wearsider retired from football in 2010, but is still heavily involved in the sport as a pundit with TalkSport and a number of other media outlets. He will be working at Wembley this weekend.
4. Lee Clark
Clark has had a reasonably successful managerial career in the last decade, leading Huddersfield, Birmingham, Blackpool and Kilmarnock. His most recent stint in charge of Bury came to an end in 2017.
5. Jody Craddock
The centre-half has reinvented himself since the end of his playing days, and is now a successful painter. He held his first professional exhibition in 2015.
6. Darren Williams
Williams played at a host of clubs after leaving Sunderland, including Hartlepool, Gateshead and Whitby Town. He spent four years managing Whitby, but was dismissed in 2015.
7. Nicky Summerbee
One of Sunderland’s Wembley goalscorers, Summerbee moved into punditry after his retirement and is currently a regular summariser on the Qatar-based Al Kass network.
8. Kevin Ball
The former Sunderland skipper remains heavily involved at the Stadium of Light in his role as a club ambassador. He has previously worked in Sunderland’s academy and operated as caretaker boss.
9. Niall Quinn
Quinn returned to Wearside to head up the Drumaville consortium that was in charge of the club between 2006-11. He worked as manager and chairman, and now has a number of business interests in Ireland.
10. Kevin Phillips
‘Super Kev’ has worked in coaching since the end of his playing career and has had successful spells on the staff at Leicester, Derby and Stoke. He has expressed a desire to move into management.
11. Allan Johnston
‘Magic’ Johnston has become a successful manager in his native Scotland. He has been boss at Kilmarnock and Dunfermline, and recently started his second spell in charge of Queen of the South

The defender retired from football after suffering a serious injury in 2008 and left the sport entirely. He is now employed as a property manager in Cheshire.
13. Alex Rae
Like a number of his former team-mates, Rae has moved into management in the last few years. His most recent post was at St Mirren, where he was replaced by Jack Ross in 2016.
14. Danny Dichio
Dichio ended his playing career at Toronto, and opted to remain in Canada. He currently coaches Toronto FC’s Under-19s side and works as a pundit for the Canadian media.

Peter Reid
Reid left Sunderland in 2002 and went on to work at Leeds, Coventry and Plymouth, as well as managing in Thailand and India. He is currently assisting Wigan manager Paul Cook on a voluntary basis.
