Goals:

0-1: Powell (4, tapped in from close range after being picked out from a counter attack)

1-1: Cassidy (5, Hawkes played the ball into the area and the returning striker finished with a low shot)

1-2: Powell (40, picked out in the area and had the time to turn and fire low after another swift break down the same flank)

Bookings: De Havilland (27, foul); Kitching (43, foul); Tajbakhsh (52, foul), Phillips (90, time wasting)

Referee: Declan Bourne (Nottingham): Allowed play to carry on at times, trying to look for the advantage, but equally allowed the visitors to kill the game in the second half 6

HARTLEPOOL UNITED (4-3-3):

6 Loach: Completely exposed by his defenders for the two goals conceded. One second-half errant missed cross aside he was safe in what he did;

6 Richardson: Always tries to get forward on the right side, but could do with some experience alongside him to help him out

3 Anderson: Marking for the two goals was non-existent. Seems to pass the ball back to his own keeper a lot, but needs to impose himself in games

4 Rodgers: Dragged out wide to the left side to cover but was beaten as both goals came in similar fashion and made some elementary mistakes

5 Kitching: Ploughed forward with plenty of the ball and looked comfortable doing so, but that left Pools too exposed in behind and both goals came from his area;

6 Hawkes: Took up some good positions, especially when Pools levelled by keeping the ball in the area, but overall was one of his quieter days

6 Magnay: Put himself about in the middle, keeping the ball moving, but in the absence of Davies would he be better served with his experience in the back four?

6 Noble: Always involved, trying to prompt the team, but again his dead ball delivery was a let down and it became an issue as the game went on when Pools were chasing a leveller;

7 James: Right sided attacker, was unlucky not to score a spectacular goal with a shot from distance that crashed against the bar. Always willing.

6 Cassidy: Did what was expected and was there as a focal point to play the ball into and hold it up for others. Took his goal well and Pools will be better in the coming games as they get used to him being back

6 Donaldson: When he gets the ball at his feet he is one of the few who can get past his man and create something, and had plenty of link up with Kitching on the left side of a front three.

Subs:

Muir (for Hawkes 64): Little impact in the latter stages as Pools couldn’t find a way through 5

Kioso (for Magnay 87)

(not used): Catterick (gk), Featherstone, McLaughlin.

MAIDSTONE UNITED (4-4-2): Ross 7; Phillips 6, De Havilland 7, Wassmer 6, McLennan 6; Tajbakhsh 6 (Edobor 65, 6), Paxman 7, Muldoon 7, Taylor 6; Powell 8, Robinson 7 (Romain 84). Subs (not used): Walton, Richards, Swaine.

MAN OF THE MATCH: Jack Powell, two smart and easy finishes and was always sharp.
