Alfreton Town 1 Spennymoor Town 7.

Spennymoor manager Jason Ainsley said that Saturday’s 7-1 hammering of Alfreton at the Impact Arena was one of the best in the club’s history.

Moors were unstoppable with some excellent football, which took their goals tally to fifteen in their last two matches and posted a very clear warning to their promotion rivals.

Glen Taylor led the way with an excellent hat trick, which reinforced his position as the top scorer in the league – he now has fourteen for the season.

“Saturday’s win is up there as one of the best away from home in the club’s history,” said Ainsley, whose association with Moors goes back over two decades.

“To go to another National League North club, that has the calibre of somebody like manager Billy Heath in charge, and to win 7-1, is a fantastic result – and their goal was a push on our defender. Alfreton had a team of big, strong, physical lads, but we managed to overcome them.  We’ve had some great away wins in this league before, but this is up amongst the best, if not the best. We must really enjoy moments like this.

“The result was unbelievable; the lads played some great stuff. It could so easily have been double figures. Glen scored a great hat trick, but he could so easily have scored five. The last time we played after a two week break against Guiseley, I thought we huffed and puffed, but we were so different on Saturday.

“Not many teams score seven away from home, especially against somebody in their own backyard that had won 2-0 away from home in midweek. I thought the second half might have been a backs-to-the-wall job, and we would have to dig deep in the wet conditions, but it wasn’t that at all. Our lads were fitter, scored some great goals, which is a testimony to them.

“The lads deserved their Saturday night out with that performance. There’s a strong feeling of pride from everybody who is involved with the club – officials, players, coaching staff and fans. We have a really happy camp and we’re all in it together. We’ve got a really strong group.

“I really thought at one point that the game was going to be abandoned. There was some really heavy rain with water gathering on the pitch, but that didn’t seem to stop our lads.”

Moors got off to a perfect start, when Andy Johnson’s shot was blocked by a defender’s arm, and Glen Taylor strode up and confidently tucked the penalty into the bottom corner.

Mattie Gould then pulled off a couple of good saves to keep Moors in the lead, but winger Shaun Tuton nearly made it 2-0 with an effort that just cleared the bar, and Adam Boyes was just off target.

Moors went 2-0 up on 32 minutes when Boyes was fouled just outside the area, and Stephen Brogan curled a superb free kick into the top corner.

A minute later, the score was 3-0 when Taylor’s shot took a deflection and looped into the air, but Jamie Chandler followed the flight of the ball and slid it into the net, although he injured himself in the process and had to be subbed soon after.

Alfreton pulled a goal back when former Darlington striker Reece Styche headed in from a corner, but Moors went 4-1 up just on half time when Johnson crossed for Taylor to head past the keeper and send the Moors fans wild.

Richard Peniket hit the post for Alfreton at the start of the second half, but Moors soon put them in their place when they went 5-1 up on 55 minutes, when Taylor blasted the ball in from a few yards from a flick on by Brogan, his eighth goal in the last five games.

The sixth came long on 63 minutes, when Tuton pounced on a back pass by Martin Riley that held up on the heavy pitch, and he rounded the keeper for his second goal in as many games.

Styche hit the bar from outside the box for the home side, then Gould held on to another effort from him.

Moors showed them how it should be done again when Jake Thackray hit the post with a header, but Johnson was on hand to roll the ball home.

Sub Mark Anderson spurned a great chance for the eighth in the closing minutes, but nevertheless Moors moved up to fifth in the table – and not many teams will fancy playing them when they’re in this mood. They’re at home to Stockport on Tuesday night at the Brewery Field.

Team: Gould, Hibbs, Brogan, Chandler (sub Williams, 36), Thackray, Curtis, Tuton (sub Hall, 67), Henry, Taylor (sub Anderson 74), Boyes, Johnson.
