How did the players fare in Newcastle's 3-2 defeat at Manchester United?

Goals:

0-1: Kenedy (7, raced on to Perez’s through ball and turned inside Young before slotting a low finish into the corner)

0-2: Muto (10, controlled Shelvey’s ball from the right and twisted past Young before drilling home)

1-2: Mata (70, curled home a superb free-kick from the corner of the box after Diame needlessly tripped Martial)

2-2: Martial (76, cut in from the left and played a slick one-two with Pogba before firing home a low strike)

3-2: Sanchez (90, rose in a crowded area to hea home Young’s right-wing cross from eight yards out)

Bookings: Shaw (45, foul), Ritchie (58, unsporting behaviour), Pogba (63, foul), Diame (69, foul)

Referee: Anthony Taylor (Wythenshawe) – The game might well have had a different finish had he spotted Young’s blatant handball from Shelvey’s free-kick 2

NEWCASTLE (4-2-3-1):

8 Dubravka: Made a succession of excellent saves to keep Newcastle in the lead – did not deserve to finish on the losing team

5 Yedlin: Couldn’t get to grips with Martial as Manchester United built up a head of steam in the second half

7 Lascelles: Dominated his opponents for more than an hour, and just about edged his personal battle with Lukaku

6 Fernandez: Justified his recall to the starting line-up, although he was pulled out of position late on as Manchester United pressed

5 Manquillo: Struggled in the closing stages as Manchester United swarmed down the flanks – the late winner came from his side

7 Shelvey: Delivered an excellent cross for Muto’s goal and came close with a fierce first-half strike that was well saved

7 Diame: Broke up a host of Manchester United attacks in the first half, but conceded a stupid foul for Mata’s goal

6 Ritchie: Worked away diligently down the right-hand side, but was never really able to break free of his marker

7 Perez: Linked play superbly in the first half and provided an excellent foil to Muto – dropped out of the game late on

8 Kenedy: Opened the scoring with an excellent low finish and went on to produce his best display of the season by a distance

8 MUTO: Excellent from start to finish as he ran the Manchester United defence ragged – scored and came close to adding to his tally

Subs:

4 Murphy (for Kenedy, 67): Couldn’t stem the flow of Manchester United’s second-half attacks

Atsu (for Muto, 78)

Joselu (for Perez, 88)

(not used): Darlow (gk), Clark, Schar, Hayden.

Man Of The Match: PAUL POGBA – The Frenchman has his critics, but he was the catalyst for Manchester United’s remarkable recovery. Seized the game by the scruff of the neck in the final 20 minutes.
