JORDAN HENDERSON insists there is still plenty to be positive about despite England being on their worst losing run for 30 years.

Saturday’s 2-1 defeat to Spain in the opening game of the Nations League means Gareth Southgate’s side have suffered three successive defeats for the first time since England lost three in a row at the European Championships in 1988.

Since seeing off Sweden in the World Cup quarter-finals, they have lost to Croatia, Belgium and Spain, and while tomorrow’s game against Switzerland at Leicester’s King Power Stadium is only a friendly, there is a clear determination to end the losing run.

The feel-good factor that accompanied this summer’s run to the last four in Russia was still evident at the weekend, with Harry Kane receiving the Golden Boot before kick-off and Southgate’s players being cheered from the pitch at full-time.

Henderson knows the importance of keeping the public on side, and claims his side are still moving forward despite their run of defeats.

“We still feel confident,” said the former Sunderland midfielder. “We still feel like we are learning. We have a lot of young players in the team.

“You want to play against the best teams and the best players to learn from the experiences, and Spain are definitely that. We will look back on the game, at what we can do better and what we did well, and then move on to the Switzerland game, which is another good test.”

Saturday’s game witnessed a sickening clash of heads between Luke Shaw and Dani Carvajal that left the England full-back lying prone on the pitch for more than five minutes.

Shaw eventually left the field on a stretcher, but was fully conscious and talking to his team-mates as he left Wembley. He underwent further medical examinations yesterday, and while he is unlikely to feature against Switzerland, he should not be facing another long-term lay-off.

“I wasn’t very close at the time, but I saw the way his head sort of shook,” said Henderson. “I think he is okay now though. At first, I didn’t know how serious it was, but obviously when the paramedics come on with the stretcher and the neck brace, you start to fear the worst. I think he’s okay though, and that’s the main thing.”

With Raheem Sterling and Adam Lallana already having pulled out of the squad, Southgate is set to call up some replacements from the Under-21 ranks ahead of tomorrow’s game.

Leicester City’s Ben Chilwell is expected to replace Shaw, with Southgate also assessing his attacking options after England’s weekend goalscorer, Marcus Rashford, complained of a niggle.

Danny Welbeck, who had a stoppage-time equaliser controversially ruled out against Spain, is likely to start alongside Harry Kane tomorrow.

“I think it’s likely we’ll have to call some players in, most likely from the Under-21s,” said Southgate.
