Spennymoor manager Jason Ainsley says that Saturday’s opponents, Southport, shouldn’t be underestimated.

Southport have started the season poorly with only one win from seven, and have picked up just one point at Haig Avenue so far, but Ainsley says that he won’t be taking anything for granted.

The mood around the Brewery Field changed completely over the Bank Holiday weekend with six points from six that pushed Moors nicely up into midtable, and Ainsley said; “This will be another good test for us.

“Southport are a full time team, who might have had a difficult start to the season, but they have got some good players. It will only be a matter of time before they start winning matches.

“We’re in a good place at the moment. The performances were there at the start of the season without the results, but they both came together last weekend.

“We played with plenty of confidence last weekend, and kept two clean sheets. We’ve worked hard on our defending at training and tried to eradicate the defensive errors, especially those at home. Those clean sheets have made us feel a lot better.”

Striker Glen Taylor has also moved into the top ten scorers in the league with two goals last weekend to give him four for the season.

“If it wasn’t for their keeper, he could have had a hat trick on Monday against FC United,” said Ainsley.

“He’s a top quality striker, who is going from strength to strength. The majority of teams in this league would love to have him.”

Ainsley adds three more players to his squad – midfielder Mark Anderson, defender Kris Thackray and number two keeper Chris Elliott – all of whom missed at least one game last weekend.

“They’re all returning to the squad, but how can I change the team after last weekend?” Ainsley points out.
