Spennymoor 2 FC United of Manchester 0.

Spennymoor won for the second time over the Bank Holiday weekend with a comfortable victory at the Brewery Field.

After going five games without a win, Moors have shot up the table over the weekend, and are now up to twelfth.

Manager Jason Ainsley was delightd with the six points, and said; “Some of our football was brilliant, one move especially in the first half.

“The second goal in the game was massive, but we didn’t get it until ten minutes from the end, and that was when we earned the breathing space.

“I couldn’t have asked for more from the players. Performance-wise, we’ve been doing well this season, and not getting the wins, but this weekend the hard work has paid off.

“We could have scored five or six. Glen Taylor could have scored a first half hat trick, but the ball wouldn’t go in for him, but when he scored the penalty, you could see how much of a relief it was to the players, it settled their nerves. It would have been a travesty if FC United had got a point from that game.”

Moors started the game well with plenty of energy and Rob Ramshaw looking dangerous.

They nearly took the lead on 18 minutes when Jake Hibbs found Glen Taylor bursting through, but his effort was deflected on to the post by United defender Chris Lynch.

Moors went close again three minutes later, this time when Henry burst into the box, and keeper Billy Crellin punched the ball as far as Andy Johnson, whose return lob went just over the bar.

And there was another chance when Ramshaw set up Taylor, and the striker’s low shot went just wide, and he was denied again a few minutes later when Crellin was in the right place to save after Ramshaw’s effort was deflected to him.

Taylor was unfortunate not to score again when he played a 1-2 to get into the box, but his attempted chip was saved.

The visitors came more into the game in the second half, but Moors finally broke through just before the hour. Johnson latched onto a return pass from Taylor and was held back in the area, and the referee pointed to the spot, from where Taylor blasted the ball home for his fourth goal of the season.

United threatened briefly, but a shot by Tom Greaves was blocked, but Moors were soon threating another.

Atkinson was inches wide from a Taylor knock down, then Henry couldn’t quite get on the end of a Taylor cross.

Crellin denied sub Ryan Hall’s low shot, but the goal that Moors so richly deserved came with a minute left when Hall broke down the right and crossed for Boyes to turn the ball home.

Gould, Hibbs, Curtis, Atkinson, Brogan, Tuton, Chandler, Ramshaw, Henry, Johnson (sub Hall 69), Taylor (sub Boyes 83).

Subs: Hayes, Foley, Jackson.
