Go with Growl in the big race of weekend, the Unibet Stewards’ Cup at Goodwood this afternoon.

He’s been fourth in the last two runnings of the race and is running off a 10lb lower mark than 12 months ago.

His fourth at York last week was a very encouraging run and he’s clearly coming into form. Richard Fahey is a dab hand at readying one for these big sprints. He also loves having winners at Goodwood and his representative looks a really solid proposition.

In the consolation race, the Qatar Stewards’ Sprint, the booking of Ryan Moore for Boy In The Bar caught my eye.

Trainer Ian Williams is another master of getting one ready for these big days. Boy In The Bar was down the field behind Growl at York last time, but he’s a course and distance winner and has patches of very good form. He looks a nice price too.

Away from Godwood, keep an eye on Bartle Hal in the Celebrating Laura Barry's 26th Birthday - EBF Novice Stakes at Thirsk.

She won on her debut at Ripon last month, when she really impressed me with her gutsy attitude. She looks a very game filly, who sticks her neck out. She’d have a decent chance.

Move In Faster runs in the following race, the British EBF Novice Stakes. He made a pleasing third on debut at Ripon. He will come a lot for that run.

Cal Rodriguez takes the rides in my absence and he’s certainly been taking his chances. He has a valuable 3lb claim and is a jockey with a real future.

I’ve been watching the Qatar Goodwood Festival from the sidelines, obviously wishing I was there. It’s a wonderful setting, matched by top-class racing.

Training performance of the week has to go to David Simcock, who saddled Lightning Spear to win his first Group One race at the age of seven. The Sussex Stakes was also a real coming of age for Oisin Murphy. People forget just how young he and he has improved such a lot over the last couple of seasons.

As David said, Oisin might not have won on the horse two years, as he was still a little green around the edges, but he is looking more and more like the finished article now.

As for myself, I haven’t set myself a date for a return to riding. I’ve been spending a fair bit of time at Jack Berry House, mainly in the hydrotherapy pool. I still feel sore but the physio is definitely working and I really can’t praise the team at Jack Berry House enough.

I have no idea how jockeys coped in the past before the building of the IJF (Injured Jockeys’ Fund) rehabilitation centres. They are an absolute godsend.
