ALEKSANDAR Mitrovic has turned his attention to this summer’s World Cup as Fulham prepare to make an offer for the Newcastle United striker.

The Serbian celebrated at Wembley on Saturday when his successful half-season loan ended with the Cottagers sealing promotion to the Premier League via the play-offs.

Mitrovic added a new dimension to Fulham’s attacking play at a crucial stage of the campaign, scoring 12 times in his 18 appearances for them.

Fulham manager Slavisa Jokanovic is keen to tie his compatriot down permanently and is already urging the club’s owner Shad Khan to splash the cash this summer.

That would include paying at least £15m to land Mitrovic, who Rafael Benitez is more than happy to see leave St James’ Park this summer. The player, though, is not ruling anything out.

Mitrovic said: “I don’t know. I am still a Newcastle United player so we will see what happens. I want to focus on the World Cup and relax a little. My agent and my people who will speak to the club. We will see what happens.”

Mitrovic has loved his time at Craven Cottage, though, having chosen to go to Fulham over Middlesbrough and Anderlecht in January.

“It’s been the best three or four months in my professional life,” he said. “I have played the best football. This team has an unbelievable soul and connection between us. I really enjoyed my time here and we’ll see what happens.

“Now I want to enjoy this today and tomorrow start preparing for the World Cup.”

Mitrovic will be heading to Russia with the Serbia squad next month looking to build on his successful end to the season; an impressive tournament could lead to greater offers and a higher transfer fee.

Jokanovic knows he needs investment and ideally he would like to have the Mitrovic deal concluded quickly.

He said: “To show the ambition, we’re going to need to show the money too. We believe we can play this way but we must know what characteristics of players we need.

“In general we must try to dominate against some teams that we believe we can dominate against and be realistic against others.

“We must know what our plan is and what are the characteristics of the players we need for the future.”
