SUNDERLAND and Middlesbrough have both been handed difficult away games in the third round of the Carabao Cup.

The draw took place in beijing in the early hours of this morning, and means both of the North-East's remaining teams will be heading on the road for their next assignment.

Sunderland's reward for Tuesday's win at Carlisle United is a trip to Goodison Park to face Everton.

Everton did not play in the second round because of their involvement in the Europa League, and Ronald Koeman's side represent one of the trickiest possible opponents Sunderland could have been drawn with.

Middlesbrough were drawn away to Championship rivals Aston Villa, with Steve Bruce's side having booked their third-round place with a comfortable win over Wigan Athletic on Tuesday.

With the third-round games due to take place in the week beginning September 18, the draw means Boro will be heading to Villa in successive midweeks as they also face a Championship game at Villa Park on Tuesday, September 12.
