GATESHEAD profited from two own goals as their strong start to the National League season continued with a convincing 3-0 home win over Torquay United.
The Heed dominated the early stages of the game, and their bright start was rewarded when Torquay defender Ryan Higgins turned Callum Williams’ cross into his own net via a deflection off his own goalkeeper.
Substitute Fraser Kerr made a crucial block to prevent Jon-Paul Pittman equalising shortly before the interval, and Gateshead doubled their advantage with ten minutes left as Richard Peniket turned home Jordan Preston’s cross.
A third goal arrived shortly after, and again it came via a slice of luck. Jordan Burrow delivered a dangerous cross into the area, and Myles Anderson could only divert the ball past Gulls goalkeeper Ryan Clarke.
The win lifts Gateshead to third position in the Conference table ahead of tomorrow night’s trip to Wrexham.
Gateshead: Montgomery, Williams, Vassell, Byrne, Fyfield, Barrow (Kerr 24 (Preston 46)), Penn, McLaughlin, Tinkler, Burrow, Johnson (Peniket 72).
