Durham's faint hopes of victory over Surrey were soon put to bed this morning.
The visitors, needing seven Surrey wickets, could only get one - that of Stewart Walters for 8 off the bowling of Steve Harmison, who ended with four wickets for 51 runs.
Mark Butcher was unbeaten on 40, with Rikki Clarke 68 not out as Surrey eased to their first win of the season by six wickets.
