Sunderland may have secured their FA Women’s Super League top-flight status for another season, but with two games to go skipper Stephanie Bannon is determined to finish the season on a high.

Bannon admits two victories against winless Doncaster Rovers Belles went some way to ensuring safety, but the defender is not content with ending the campaign with a whimper.

Notts County are in town this weekend and sit two places above Sunderland in the FA WSL 1 table, having beaten the Black Cats 2-1 when the sides met last month.

And after a rollercoaster encounter in Nottingham where the hosts had to come from behind, Bannon has identified the encounter is a must-win fixture.

“We are very relieved to have stayed up but a bit disappointed that we had to rely on other teams to do it for us,” she said.

“The fact we managed to beat Doncaster twice obviously meant that we are safe. We are relieved and obviously happy to stay up and we can look to put things right next year and in the final weeks of this season.

“We got beat by Notts County a couple of weeks ago in what was a game of two halves.

“The fact that we were the better team in the first half meant that we could impose ourselves on them more than we did on the second half. But after a long season we just want to finish on a high.

“I think for us the aim is just to win both games and look to keep a clean sheet because we haven’t been brilliant at that this year so as a team we have our own targets. I’m sure if we manage to do that we can finish as high as we possibly can.”

Notts County have won their last two games in the competition, including a crucial 2-1 win over Doncaster last time out to keep Sunderland up.
