TOM BEADLING’S late penalty earned Sunderland’s Under-23s a 2-2 draw with Derby County at the Stadium of Light.
The Black Cats named summer signings Mika and Donald Love in their starting line-up, along with Lynden Gooch and Joel Asoro, but fell behind shortly before the hour mark.
Portuguese goalkeeper Mika made a mess of dealing with a corner, and the ball rebounded off Alex Babos and rolled back into the net.
Sunderland equalised in the 76th minute, with Gooch teeing up Daniel Wright for a close-range finish, but fell behind again a minute later as Kellan Gordon capitalised on a loose ball after another Mika error to fire home.
Beadling earned the Black Cats a draw with five minutes left though, converting from the spot after Josh Maja was fouled in the area.
Sunderland: Mika, J Robson, T Robson, Love (Wright 70), Beadling, Brady, Honeyman, E Robson, Asoro (Maja 78), Gooch, Greenwood.
