ENGLAND will head into the final day of the fourth Test at Riverside tomorrow looking for quick wickets to maintain slight hopes of recording a third win of the series against the West Indies.

The tourists, after losing three wickets, remain 30 behind Michael Vaughan's men and are looking to Shivnarine Chanderpaul to perform again if they are to avoid defeat.

Chanderpaul, after hitting an undefeated 136 in the first innings, sits on 16 alongside opener Chris Gayle, who was solid from the outset and finished on 52.

After gaining a first innings 113-run lead, mainly due to the heroics of Paul Collingwood's 128, the West Indies order found the England attack in determined mood for a brief time after tea.

Hoggard quickly took the wickets of Devon Smith and West Indies captain Daren Ganga to get the sparse Riverside crowd excited.

Firstly Smith was disposed of for nought when he was caught lbw and then Ganga followed him back to the pavilion when he edged behind to Matthew Prior on just six.

Just 18 more runs had been added to the West Indies total when Monty Panesar - with his second of the match - forced Runako Morton to chop onto his own stumps on just seven runs.

But Gayle and Chanderpaul stopped Hoggard and company in their tracks and England will be desperate to remove at least one of the two quickly tomorrow morning.

Meanwhile, Michael Vaughan is expected to stand down as England's one day captain ahead of the forthcoming NatWest Series.
