PAUL COLLINGWOOD turned on the style on his first Test appearance at Riverside to power England ahead against the West Indies.

The Durham all-rounder, ably assisted by Matthew Prior before his dismissal brought to an end a solid 169 seventh wicket stand, hit his second century in 13 Test innings on a Chester-le-Street pitch familiar to him.

Collingwood reached his hundred inside 207 minutes and continued apace until tea when he ended undefeated on 115, when England sat on 341-7.

The 31-year-old's astute display alongside Prior ensured England - who restarted after lunch on 202-6 - eventually passed the West Indies 287 first innings total in the 79th over midway through the afternoon.

Prior's own performance should not be under-valued either. The Sussex wicketkeeper hit four fours and two sixes on his way to 62 before he was caught at deep square leg by Devon Smith from Fidel Edwards' ball.
