Aaron Baddeley wasted no time opening the door for Tiger Woods yesterday at Oakmont, then Woods turned around and did the same.

Baddeley started his final round of the US Open with a triple bogey to tumble out of the lead.

Woods waited two holes to record his big number, a six at the par four third.

Baddeley added a double bogey at the seventh to lie seven over par, three off the lead held by Argentina's Angel Cabrera.

At four over par after 11 holes, Cabrera was one ahead of Woods with former champion Jim Furyk another shot back.

Trying to become the second Australian in succession to capture the US Open, Baddeley entered Sunday with a two-shot lead over Woods.

But he surrendered the lead after taking four shots to get onto the first green and three-putting for a seven.

Woods' double at the third came after his approach rolled off the back of the putting surface and he thinned his first chip back across the green.

There were birdies to be made at Oakmont, but the question was whether or not the final groups could withstand the pressure to make them.

Anthony Kim signed for a three-under 67 that included five birdies and Cabrera was two under through 11.

Woods rebounded to get back to five over with a birdie at the par-five fifth and crucially scrambled for par on the sixth and seventh.

Justin Rose was three over through ten holes and eight over for the tournament, four off the lead.

But Paul Casey dropped out of contention with a nightmare front nine, the Ryder Cup star taking 43 to the turn, including a triple-bogey six on the sixth.

It could all have been so different as well, Casey missing good birdie chances on the first two holes.

Cabrera, however, was in superb form. He got back to four over and retook the lead with a birdie at the par four 11th, and could have increased his lead with short-range efforts on the next two as well.

Those chances went begging but he was soon two clear anyway, Woods making a bogey on the 11th after failing to get up and down from a greenside bunker.

Furyk moved into third on seven over with a birdie on the 13th. Furyk continued his climb up the leaderboard with two more birdies, at 14 and 15 to lie five over.

He was two shots behind Cabrera after the Argentinian birdied the 15th but a bogey at 16 sliced the lead to one.

Woods had a fast birdie putt at 13 from five feet that he could not convert. He remained two off the lead at six over with five holes to play.

Niclas Fasth, David Toms and Bubba Watson were all at eight over with Steve Stricker and Stephen Ames another shot back.

* South Africa's Ashleigh Simon became the youngest professional winner of a Ladies European Tour event at the Catalonia Ladies Masters in Spain, edging out British duo Becky Brewerton and Kirsty Taylor by two strokes.

The teenager, aged 18 and 37 days, carded a final round two-under-par 70.
