STUBBORN resistance from the West Indies' number 11 Corey Collymore and the in-form Shiv Chanderpaul clouded Ryan Sidebottom's maiden five-wicket haul in Tests at Chester-le-Street this afternoon.
Sidebottom's heroics - taking his tally for the series to 16 wickets - had looked like ensuring England held the upperhand in the fourth and final Test.
However, Collymore's introduction ensured that Chanderpaul (136 not out) was given the partner which enabled him to carry on at full speed and the West Indies were able to reach 287 before the final wicket fell before tea.
After reaching 13, Collymore was bowled lbw by Monty Panesar, who had finally broken through to claim his first of the match.
Left-armer Sidebottom had claimed a handful as England looked like they were going to dismantle the tourists' tail quickly.
The Nottinghamshire bowler inflicted the crucial blow before lunch when he claimed Marlon Samuels for 19. He followed that up by dismissing Denesh Ramdin and Fidel Edwards either side of Daren Powell being caught by Matthew Prior from Steve Harmison's bouncer.
Prior to lunch, Matthew Hoggard had made Dwayne Bravo the first victim of the day with the Yorkshire star's 237 wicket in Tests.
