JOEY BARTON has today completed his controversial transfer to Newcastle United, after the Magpies agreed to pay extra for the midfielder.

Barton was on Tyneside last week to complete contract negotiations after the St James' Park outfit had agreed to pay Manchester City £5.5m.

However, despite a determination to move to St James' Park, Barton had demanded a £300,000 payment which he felt he was due for having never asked for a transfer from Eastlands.

And, after almost a week of wrangles which ended with the intervention of the PFA, Manchester City revealed last night that Newcastle have opted to pay the extra cash. Barton, who passed a medical last week, is finally a Newcastle player.

The confirmation of the Barton deal emerged as Newcastle lost out to Chelsea in the race to sign Israeli defender Tal Ben Haim.
