British number one Andy Murray may leave it until the weekend before Wimbledon starts to decide whether to take part in the championships.

The 20-year-old, ranked ninth in the world, is recovering from a wrist injury suffered at the Hamburg Masters last month which has already ruled him out of the French Open and the Artois Championships at Queen's Club.

Murray's coach, Brad Gilbert, said this week he was hopeful the Scot would play at the Boodles Challenge exhibition event next week, and Murray wants to leave the decision whether to play at Wimbledon as late as possible.

''Hopefully by next week I'll be playing points and will make a decision around the weekend,'' he said.

''I've been practising for the last ten days. It's tough to say whether I'll be playing but it's getting much better.''

''If I'm ready for Wimbledon then great; if not I'll get ready for the American hard-court stretch.''

Murray had to wear a cast on his injured wrist, even though no bones were broken.

He said: ''Each day I've been playing a bit more, hitting the ball a bit harder.

''I'm not going into a match at Wimbledon without having played two or three sets of a practice match as hard as I can.

''I don't want to do anything to cause extra damage.''
