DARLINGTON and Hartlepool United have been handed difficult away trips in the first round of the Carling Cup.

Newly-promoted Pools will travel to Championship newcomers Scunthorpe United.

And Dave Penney's Darlington most overcome an other Championship side, Barnsley.

Darlington last travelled to Barnsley in 2005 when they were knocked out of the FA Cup at the first round stage.

Quakers caused an upset last season when they knocked Stoke out of the Carling Cup, before bowing out on penalties at Premiership Reading.

Pools reached the second round last season after knocking out Burnley, before losing on penalties at Hull City.

Ties will be played the week beginning August 13.
