Spennymoor Town 3 Burscough 1

Spennymoor made it the perfect ten when they beat Burscough 3-1 at the Brewery Field on Saturday. Magnificent Moors have now won their last ten league matches in a run stretching back to January, when they drew 2-2 with Trafford.

Since then, they have collected 30 points, scored 43 goals, and conceded just three.

It’s a pity that leaders Warrington are so far ahead of them at the top of the table and are almost guaranteed the title, but Moors are looking very good for second place and home advantage in the play offs.

Manager Jason Ainsley said; “I don’t think the club has ever had a run like it, certainly not in my time here as a player and manager over 20 years. “I thought the game was pretty stop-start in the first half and we couldn’t get going, but we showed our quality in the second half.

“But we’re still not getting carried away, there are still a lot of tough games to play before we start thinking of the play offs.”

After a goalless first half, Moors took the lead just 40 seconds after the restart when Mark Anderson scored his second spectacular goal in four days with a low shot into the bottom corner.

Burscough levelled when a sliced clearance by keeper Dan Lowson off a back pass fell eventually for Michael Monaghan to score, but Moors regained the lead when Andrew Stephenson finished off a good move with a low shot. Midfielder Craig Gott finished off the win, with a delightful 25 yard free kick into the top corner.

Team: Lowson, Griffiths, Mason, Gott, Tait, Watson, Stephenson, Henry, Henderson, Fisher (sub Risbrough), Anderson (sub Dowson). Subs not used: Cogdon, Johnson, Peacock.

Whitby are now fifth from bottom of the Premier Division after a late goal by Mikey Roberts gave them the points at home to Buxton. Blyth stayed four points clear at the top by beating Matlock with a goal by Nathan Buddle. They had Dan Maguire dismissed just after half time for elbowing an opponent.
