SUNDERLAND (4-1-4-1):
5 Mannone: A few shaky moments in the first half and beaten by Martial after making a half decent save from Mata initially;
6 Yedlin: Should have had his work cut out in trying to contain Martial but he stuck to the task reasonably well
8 Kone: Has given the Sunderland defence a real boost since his arrival and this was another performance showing why
8 O’SHEA: Has quickly developed an understanding with Kone and that is breeding confidence throughout the side
8 van Aanholt: Solid defensively and a real nuisance going forward; looks a different player to previous runs in the side;
5 Kirchhoff: Mixed fortunes for quarter of an hour with some good and bad decisions;
7 N’Doye: A much improved appearance to his Liverpool outing and should have scored when he was denied by de Gea
7 M’Vila: Effective in the holding role after Kirchhoff’s early exit with strong tackling and simple passing
7 Cattermole: Played two brilliant through passes in the second half to show how he is embracing playing further forward
8 Khazri: Scored the early opener and impressed everyone with his non-stop running and effort;
7 Defoe: Led the line brilliantly from start to finish even though he only passed a late fitness test.
Subs:
Rodwell (for Kirchhoff 15): Could not be faulted for his contribution and made his share of blocks. 6
Borini (for Defoe 71)
Toivonen (for Cattermole 85)
(not used): Pickford (gk), Brown, Matthews, Honeyman.
MANCHESTER UNITED (4-2-3-1): De Gea 7; Darmian 5 (Love 38, 5), Smalling 7, Blind 7, Borthwick-Jackson 5; Schneiderlin 5 (Keane 86), Carrick 6; Martial 7, Mata 7, Lingard 5 (Memphis 62, 4); Rooney 5. Subs (not used): Romero (gk), Herrera, Pereira, Weir.
MAN OF THE MATCH: JOHN O’Shea won his battles against his former club to shine just as brightly as the new boys around him.
