OXFORD UNITED midfielder Kemar Roofe admits he is flattered by Newcastle’s United mounting interest, but insists he will remain focused on life in League Two.

Magpies chief scout Graham Carr was at the Kassam Stadium earlier this month to watch Roofe in action, potentially paving the way for a firm approach for the 22-year-old once the transfer window reopens in January.

Roofe scored his 11th goal of the season via a 25-yard free-kick on Saturday as Oxford claimed a 1-0 win over Dagenham & Redbridge to move into second in the League Two table.

The attacking midfielder, who is a former trainee at West Brom, has scored 17 goals in his last 27 games for Oxford, and is aware that he is being closely monitored by Newcastle’s recruitment team.

“I was told about it (Newcastle watching him) on Friday, but it’s just speculation and that happens in football,” said Roofe. “I just wanted to prepare for the game.

“Of course it’s flattering and I must be doing something right, but as long as we win games and get promoted at the end of the season, that’s all that matters.”
