YORK CITY are still waiting for their first home win of the season after they slipped to a 3-2 defeat to AFC Wimbledon.

Goals from on-loan duo Diego De Girolamo and Stephane Zubar proved insufficient as Wimbledon claimed all three points courtesy of strikes from Jake Goodman, Sean Rigg and Matt Tubbs.

The visitors claimed the lead midway through the first half as Goodman met George Francomb’s corner and scored with a downward header that beat City keeper Alex Cisak far too easily.

York got back on level terms in the 55th minute when De Girolamo collected a short Michael Coulson corner, spun his marker and unleashed a 15-yard shot that skimmed off Goodman’s head into the net.

Wimbledon responded almost immediately, however, claiming two goals in as many minutes to leave York with a mountain to climb.

Both goals came from right-wing crosses from Francomb, with the first being turned in by Rigg from three yards and the second sailing over Cisak before it was headed in from a yard by Tubbs.

City got back into the game on 75 minutes when Russell Penn’s low centre from the right was helped on to enable Zubar to pounce and force the ball over the line from close range.

Substitute Carlton Morris fired just wide from distance, but the final whistle signalled a 13th Bootham Crescent outing without a win for the Minstermen.

“You can’t afford to concede poor, poor goals like that and that lost us the game in a nutshell,” said York boss Russ Wilcox. “We had two key moments in our left-back corner for their second and third goals and we’ve got to deal with both and defend better.

“Sometimes, you have to kick the ball out of play and not take chances but we didn’t do that twice in the same position. We’ve been solid in most games since I arrived but the match was a freebie for Wimbledon.”
