Time flies when you're having fun and jockey Andrea Atzeni has certainly had plenty of that as the curtain comes down on another Flat season at Doncaster today.

Atzeni is set to be retained rider for the massive Qutar operation next season, but before then he can cap his fine term with success into today's feature, the November Handicap on Mount Logan for Newmarket handler Luca Cumani.

The trainer also saddles the Richard Hughes-ridden Sir Walter Scott and believes the market leader will have to step up his game if he is strike gold, but I feel there is more to come and I was really impressed with his course and distance win at the St Leger meeting.

Speaking yesterday morning, Cumani said: "It was a good performance at the track last time from Mount Logan and he's in good form.

"He has gone up a lot in the weights, so he'll have to contend with that, and the ground will be softer as well.

"You don't know how they'll cope with softer ground until they try, so we'll see. Sir Walter Scott is in there with a shout and has a small each-way chance."

After this race Richard Hughes will be crowned Champion Jockey for the third time - a top effort considering Hughes missed this first six weeks of the season due to injury.

Former Champion Paul Hanagan will not be there after suffering a fractured a collarbone in a pile up at Wolverhampton on Thursday night. Also caught up in the fall was Richard Kingscote who suffered a badly broken arm.

Hanagan's agent Richard Hale, said yesterday: "It was a clean break of the collarbone and he'll be out for a good month.

"At least it's the end of the season, and he'll be back for the (Dubai) Carnival. It could have been much worse."

It could, indeed, have been but it just highlights the danger all jockeys put themselves in every day they go to work.

On the jumping front, Wincanton stage a cracking card and Irving bids to give trainer Paul Nicholls a seventh success in the StanJames.com Elite Hurdle when he makes his seasonal debut.

Earlier this week I was lucky enough to spend a morning at the Dicheat yard, which has such an excellent record in this race with wins with Azertyuiop, Santenay, Perouse, dual scorer Celestial Halo and Zarkandar.

Now Irving attempts to get on the roll of honour and kick-start his campaign.

The six-year-old was a smart novice last term, winning his first four starts before losing his 100 per cent record in the Supreme Novices' Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival.

Connections have had this limited handicap in mind for some time and report Irving ready to return to the fray.

"We're looking forward to it. We're happy with him. His work's been good," said Dan Downie, racing manager for owners Axom.

"It's his first run of the season so I'm sure he'll come on a little bit for it, but he's ready and we'll see how we go.

"It's an ideal race for him to start. It's been the plan for a long time.

"Whatever the weather does we're not really that concerned. It's all systems go."

Irving receives 12lb from Rock On Ruby, the 2012 Champion Hurdle hero and that should be enough to make a difference for me.
