CHRIS TOMLINSON needed just one jump to book his place in the Commonwealth Games long jump final this morning.
Tomlinson went out to 7.89m in his first qualifying jump in Glasgow, and while the mark was 1cm short of the automatic qualifying distance, it was always going to be good enough for him to claim one of the 12 places on offer for the final.
The Teessider has been nursing a leg injury in the build up to the Games, so opted to sit out his final two jumps, with his opening mark proving good enough for him to qualify in sixth position.
"I only had the one jump because I wanted to protect myself as much as I could," said Tomlinson. "It was an easy enough morning."
Olympic champion Greg Rutherford was the leading qualifier, with his opening jump of 8.05m earning him an automatic passage to tomorrow night's final.
