AITOR KARANKA has freshened up his in-form Middlesbrough team by making five changes for the New Year's Day trip to Bolton.
As well as replacing the suspended Dean Whitehead with Richie Smallwood, Karanka has surprisingly given the team which defeated Reading a new-look.
The biggest change sees Emmanuel Ledesma, refreshed and revitalised in recent weeks, drop to the bench and Mustapha Carayol is recalled on the flanks.
There are also places for Jacob Butterfield, Rhys Williams and Curtis Main in the starting line-up, with Jozsef Varga, Marvin Emnes and Lukas Jutkiewcz filling the bench.
BOLTON (4-2-3-1): Lonergan; Baptiste, Mills, Knight, Ream; Spearing, Davies; Lee, Pratley, Eagles; Mason. Subs: Lee-Barrett, White, Medo, Moritz, Beckford, Ngog, Vela.
MIDDLESBROUGH (4-2-3-1): Given; Williams, Ayala, Gibson, Friend; Leadbitter, Smallwood; Adomah, Butterfield, Carayol; Main. Subs: Konstantopoulos (gk), Varga, Jutkiewicz, Hines, Richardson, Emnes, Ledesma.
