A last-wicket stand of 75 between Graeme Swann and Ajmal Shahzad has denied Durham the chance of victory.

They need 183 to win in 21 overs and while they might be tempted to give it a go it is surely beyond them.

After removing only nightwatchman Luke Fletcher this morning, Durham’s hopes rose after lunch when three wickets went down for 22 runs.

Home skipper Chris Read had contributed 29 to a seventh-wicket stand of 54 in 22 overs when he edged Scott Borthwick to Paul Collingwood.

Ten runs later Lumb departed for 123 when he gave Gareth Breese a return catch and when Stuart Broad became Borthwick’s third victim of the innings Nottinghamshire were only 107 ahead with one wicket standing.

But Durham have past experience of the fact that both Swann and Shahzad can bat. Long before he became an England regular, and before his move to Trent Bridge, Swann scored a century against them at Northampton in 2002.

Last season, when Shahzad was on loan at Lancashire from Yorkshire, he went in with the Red Rose men on 168 for eight in their second innings at Chester-le-Street, still needing 32 to win. He duly knocked them off with Kyle Hogg.

Tea was delayed and Swann made 55 before he fell lbw to Borthwick, who finished with four for 87.
