HARTLEPOOL United sit six points from League One safety after falling to defeat at Coventry.
At a time when they need wins, this was their fourth game without a victory, and they are without a goal in each of them.
But defeat came in a controversial manner.
The only goal came on 37 minutes. Pools’ skipper Peter Hartley felt he was fouled by Cody McDonald as the striker and defender collided on the edge of the area.
Referee Fred Graham played on, and McDonald turned into the area to shoot low across Scott Flinders.
Pools were furious at the decision. Manager John Hughes was sent to the stands for the second half after letting his feelings be known at half-time.
And, following the final whistle, coach Micky Barron was refrained by a number of stewards as he clashed with home boss Steven Pressley, before making a play for the official.
The game had 0-0 all over it, with neither side really offering much of an attacking threat.
Peter Hartley and Sam Collins both sent early headers over the bar from Evan Horwood corners.
But Pools didn’t threaten directly on goal and need to lift their game for Tuesday’s must-win trip to Oldham.
