RITCHIE Humphreys has been part of a Hartlepool United relegation team before - but their current situation is new territory.

Pools are rooted to the foot of League One and facing a return to the basement division.

Humphreys was at the club last time they dropped down, in the 2005-6 season before they bounced back instantly the next campaign.

Pools are at MK Dons today, having gone a club-record equalling 20 games since they last won.

And the club's record appearance holder admitted: "I've been relegated with Pools before but, no, I've not been in a position like this before.

"It's not a nice situation but that's what football throws up at you sometimes.

"Football's lovely when everything is going right, you are up challenging in the players and people are playing with confidence.

"But now is the time to dig deep, the time for soul searching and the time for everyone to work hard every day.

"No one is going to give you any points, you are going to have to earn them.

"It's a challenge for us this weekend at MK Dons, but one we will relish as players pitting our wits against some of the better players in League One.''

Humphreys was man of the match last weekend when Pools lost to Stevenage, a game which John Hughes' side created the better openings and showed signs of improvement.

"You have seen on Saturday that he (Hughes) likes to get people in off the line and coming short to get the pass,'' said Humphreys. "He's looking to get good movement and that should create chances.

"Short, sharp passing and movement should make angles that we can look to exploit

"Last Saturday we weren't just passing for the sake of doing it.

"It's done for a reason and that is to try to open up gaps and create chances.

"If and when we do that then it's up to us to stick some away

"Each manager is different and they have their methods and philosphies.

"He is trying to instil confidence in the lads to go out and express themselves more.

"The effort and commitment is there and now we're looking to take the work and the improvements we have made into matchday.''
