VOLUNTEERS are one of the most important resources any organisation can have and First Stop Darlington is no different.

Without this loyal, hardworking group of people, small charitable organisations would struggle to survive, especially in the current economic climate.

They are people who come in week after week for no more than the knowledge that they may make a difference to our clients, and make a difference they do.

Some of our clients have complex issues and our volunteers, who are from all walks of life, bring with them a wealth of knowledge and understanding which is secondto- none.

Clients see our volunteers as workers (which they are) and are often shocked and surprised that someone would give their time for free and help them when they think life itself has given up on them.

Their fresh and enthusiastic approach is infectious among staff and clients alike.

I hope that they, in turn, get valuable work experience and training which will help in any future career they choose. As well as the knowledge that they have helped people when they have been at their lowest point to move forward in an upwards direction on their journey towards independence.

STUDENTS at Darlington College have clocked up 930 hours of volunteering this year.

The Pathways group, led by tutors Ali Wright and Judith Itthuralde, has done everything from collecting Easter eggs for Family Help, to ‘signing’ Christmas carols for Help for Heroes, to working with eVOLution and taking part in college fundraising.

Some of the students act as student reps for the college, others have worked in a charity shop, and one very committed student, Sarah Donnelly, has done 95 voluntary hours at a local nursery.

On top of the 930 volunteer hours, these wonderful students have helped out at St Teresa’s warehouse and raised money for Children in Need, Help The Heroes and First Stop.

They have also washed children’s toys, carried out mailshots for Darlington Association on Disability, packed hampers, run raffles and competitions and collected clothing for Teenagers for Family.

They are led by an inspirational team and the whole of Darlington College is extremely proud of their commitment and energy to helping others across the town.
