AFTER years of the European Union’s political correctness campaign trying to destroy Christmas, we now have to endure an attack on that mainstay of the British Christmas, that weapon of mass destruction, the humble cracker.
European Directive 2007/23 The Pyrotechnic Articles (Safety) Regulations 2010 on the placing on the market of pyrotechnic articles means that you will have to produce ID and prove you are over 16 to buy them (Echo, Dec 16).
We always knew the EU was nuts, but this proves that they’re crackers, too.
Bruce Reid, Vice-Chairman, UK Independence Party (County Durham), Sacriston.
FOOTNOTE: According to the British Retail Consortium, the European Directive limits sale to the under 12s. However, the British Government has “goldplated” the Directive and raised the age limit to 16.
