REGARDING Christopher Wardell’s letter (HAS, Dec 14) about being charged an admission fee to perform with his band at a local working men’s club, I had a similar experience in the Sixties when I was a member of The Crusaders, a Darlington-based group who were booked to play at East End Club in the town.

Like Christopher, when I arrived at the venue the doorman took one look at my shoulder length hair and refused to believe I was a guitarist in the band.

Only after getting the rest of the band to the door was I allowed in.

Some say the reason we get these problems is the doormen have probably heard the likes of Mr Wardell and myself perform before and would like to make it as awkward as possible for us to upset their faithful patrons.

Surely not, Christopher.
