I APPRECIATED the advice given in the excellent article by Sharon Griffiths – “Fare Comment” (Echo, Oct 18), but I was surprised that she did not mention the service offered by thetrainline.com.

I have just booked a return trip from Darlington to Southampton, leaving next Friday. National Rail Enquiries came up with a best price of £145.50, including the delight of using the London Underground to change stations.

The Trainline offered me a price of £75.90, with the only change being a half-hour wait in Birmingham. And the outward journey was in first-class accommodation at the same price as standard class.

Which alternative did I choose?

Brian Humphrey, Darlington.
