REMOVAL of bulky waste used to be free for residents of the former Easington District Council area.

The replacement unitary authority’s decision to make an additional charge for this service has led to a noticeable increase in fly tipping and the problems it brings.

Easington Liberal Democrats are opposed to Durham County Council charging for an essential civic service on top of high rates of council tax (Easington having the fifth most expensive council tax in the country).

Fly tipping affects the environment, making both residential areas and regions of stunning natural beauty unsightly, harming investment and tourism.

It is also a health risk as it encourages vermin and the diseases carried by them.

As if that wasn’t enough, the county’s policy is not cost-effective as it is more costly to remove bulky waste thrown in the countryside or obstructing roadways than it is to arrange a pick- up outside someone’s house.

The charge on bulky waste makes no sense and is bad financially, environmentally and for residents’ health. We want the charge repealed and bulky waste to be collected as part of the standard council services.
