RECENT proposals in the County Durham Plan to replace both County Hall and the Durham Police headquarters at Aykley Heads with a new national business centre omit to mention how much it would actually cost to demolish those buildings in the first place.
Built in the early Sixties, both have a high percentage of asbestos (or the “miracle fibre” as it was known) in their construction and the logistics of safely knocking them down while ensuring none of the fibres get into the atmosphere would presumably take a massive chunk out of any money-spinning benefits that the council seems to think it’s going to make.
