TOM Cooper asked: “If Ian Huntley wins his case against the Prison Service for not protecting him from his fellow prisoners does that mean we can all make claims against the police for not protecting us from criminals when we are robbed, etc?” (HAS, Aug 4).

Not when you are robbed, but victims of violent crime can already claim compensation from the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority. It makes awards ranging from £1,000 to £500,000.

Applicants must have been injured in an act of violence committed in England, Scotland or Wales – seriously enough to claim the minimum £1,000 – and within the two years before making the claim.
