WITH the sounds of fireworks still ringing in my ears and the sights of breathtaking artistic displays still fresh in my mind, I look back on this year’s Stockton International Riverside Festival with immense pride.

It is the 23rd year it has been staged in the borough and the 20th year that the Stockton Riverside Fringe Festival has also brought enjoyment to music lovers of all ages.

This year was perhaps the best yet. Tens of thousands of people enjoyed a tremendous array of theatre, street dance and international performance not seen elsewhere in this country.

It was especially pleasing to see the High Street lined with spectators to enjoy our biggest ever Community Carnival, involving 1,300 people from all corners of the borough and I was delighted to be a part of that unique parade.

The fact that Stockton can stage such an ambitious and truly international event of this scale, every year, is testimony to the commitment of all those involved.

So, congratulations to all the local volunteers, community groups, staff at Stockton Borough Council and at the Tees Music Alliance who made it such a wonderful four days. Thanks also to all the visitors who came from near and far to see Stockton at its best.

Councillor Colin Leckonby, Mayor of Stockton.
