THE notion that Gordon Brown is a bully to some of his staff in Downing Street doesn’t surprise me. Not that I believe such a claim.

It is not the first time the Prime Minister’s manner and personality have been called into question. “Stubborn” and “lacking warmth” are just two features identified by his critics.

Such comments constitute a timely strategy by the Conservatives and those dissident voices who wish to undermine his authority and in so doing attempt to influence public opinion – this being at a time when David Cameron’s popularity and Tory policies are not entirely buoyant or credible.

After all, this is politics and a General Election looms. Some sections of the media are pinning their hopes on a Tory victory so they can write off the Government as yesterday’s party.

No one in Downing Street suggested that Margaret Thatcher was a bully. Indeed, the strength of her leadership (supporter or not) was her decisive action and determination.

We want strength in our leaders and conviction in delivering policies even if at times they are unsavoury.
