IN response to Keith Dewison’s letter, “Give us a vote” (HAS, Feb 16), I can confirm, following the introducition of new legislation, Stockton Borough Council has agreed that it will consult its residents on the two options available for its executive arrangements from the local elections in 2011.

The two models available are either a directly-elected mayor and cabinet or a council leader and cabinet, the leader having a four- year term of office.

The first round of consultation on the new options took place during November last year.

Residents were asked for their views through our website, the Viewpoint panel, at various partnership meetings and at displays in public buildings.

A total of 425 people expressed a view, which was evenly balanced, and last December the council reviewed the outcome of these initial consultations and looked at the costs involved in carrying out further consultation.

It was decided the most cost-effective way of consulting with residents was by writing to all those on the electoral register with details of each of the options and asking for their preference.

Once collated, these views will help to inform the cabinet which will then put forward a proposal to the full council.

Councillor Ken Lupton, Leader, Stockton Borough Council.
