WHEN our new unitary authority for County Durham was imposed upon us we were assured that it would work unceasingly to provide us with improved services at savings of £21m – ie, more for less (oft quoted ).
How true: awarding the new Durham City park-and-ride contract to Arriva for £24,000 per year more than present operator Scarlet Band would have cost, and – if you believe all the comments we read in Hear All Sides – we can expect less service.
Also, I have it in writing from a transport official at the authority who said: “The preferred bid from Arriva will actually cost less per day than the current rate being paid to Scarlet Band.”
So, there we have it; case proven. You can’t beat his logic.
Why I was worried or concerned at all beats me.
