IN response to Rodney Atkinson's letter, headed "Jail benefits" (HAS, May 21), I would like to clarify the TV licence requirements in prisons.

In some cases, Crown buildings, where used for official purposes, are not required to have a TV licence.

Prisons fall under this Crown exemption and televisions used by prisoners in cells and/or any other communal areas within the prison grounds, do not need to be licensed.

I would also like to remind readers that anyone aged 75 or over is entitled to a free TV licence for their main address.

The free licence is not issued automatically and needs to be applied for, either by post or by telephoning 0844-800-5875.

Applicants will be asked to provide name, address, date of birth and National Insurance number (to be found in the top left-hand corner of pension books).

Even if someone can't find their National Insurance number, they can still qualify for a free licence, but will need to call us so we can help them to claim it.

Further information about concessions or Crown exemptions is available on www.tvlicensing.co.uk or by contacting TV Licensing on 0844-800-6732.
