I AGREE with all that John Fisher says in connection with the honourable word "hero" (HAS, Jan 22).
Over recent years the word has been used to congratulate people who, quite honestly, are unworthy.
A hero is a male or female of whatever age who, disregarding personal danger, acts to protect and remove a potential victim to safety.
It also covers anyone who stands up to vandals or troublemakers knowing full well they may be knocked down and, at least, seriously injured.
I would also add people who have had many long months and even years of dreadful pain and have tried to be dignified with resolution and fortitude.
I therefore second Mr Fisher's suggestion that editors be thoughtful when using the word "hero".
