RE the proposed removal of the statues of the third Marquis of Londonderry on horseback and Neptune from Durham Market Place (Echo, Jan 18).

The "man on the horse" or "the horse with no tongue" - as the Londonderry statue is known - is as famous as the Castle and Cathedral. Without them the Market Place would be just another open space in any town or city.

What space will be gained by removing them a few square yards for a "greasy spoon van" or some more "higgledy-piggledy"

pedestrian-tripping paving.

On certain nights of the year it is said the Marquis gets off his horse and walks around the Market Place to stretch his legs.

One hopes he meets these fools and consultants who want to locate him in some dismal location well out of the way, draws his sword and chops off their heads.
