RE your article naming major factory closures and job losses in the North-East during the past ten years (Echo, Dec 15). I am amazed you omitted a long-standing company that was based at Dragonville, in Durham.

This company, Mono Containers, had been in Durham since 1949 and was the major employer there for many years. The company was the major producer of disposable food containers and drinking cups in Europe.

I left Mono in 2004. At that time there were about 350 employees and it was referred to as the Jewel in The Crown of the Autobar Group.

What remains of that operation now? A small company which is trading under another name and is left with about 70 employees. Mono Containers and many people were sacrificed for the creation of a shopping development. To this day that development has never happened and the site is still derelict.
