CORRESPONDENT D Harrison complained of a lack of basic knowledge among today's "qualified" drivers (HAS, Dec 18).
That's just it, they are qualified to drive the vehicle.
I understand that in 1952, when Mr Harrison passed his driving test, he no doubt did a basic driving test and was also shown how to do an engine change at the side of the road when the car broke down.
Has he been under the bonnet of a modern car recently? Apart from oil and washer bottle water levels, there is not a great deal that the end user can do without a higher qualification in advanced mechanics and a tool box the size of a small industrial estate. That is what I pay my local mechanic to do.
All those aids Mr Harrison referred to are technology - and if they assist in driving "confidently and safely", so be it.
